This study aims to forward the debate over environmental strategy in business. It is argued that traditional approaches to environmental management can not deliver sustainability and this book therefore outlines where we must go next. At the core of the book, a clear distinction is made between strategies associated with environmental management, ecological management and sustainable development. Sustainability strategy incorporates ecological strategy but goes further in considering the organization's role. Ethical issues are placed firmly on the business agenda; what is required is a change in ideology, an acceptance by industry of its ethical and social responsibilities. Richard Welford concludes by looking forward to what is possible through commitment, creativity and a challenge to conservatism. In developing the notion of the transcendent organization, "Environmental Strategy and Sustainable Development" ends by building a radical business agenda for the future.
